About coton de tulear ...

Coton Coton de tulear is rather new but very popular breed in Finland. First dogs game less than 20 years ago to Finland and the first ones we relative to each other.

Some people call this lovely breed "clown of the dogworld" and somepoint of view you can agree... Puppies are most wanted, some must wait his own pup many months, even a year if you like to have a puppy from a certain breeder. One reason might be that breed is small, it is NOT a trimmed one (but coat must be taken care!) and it is very easy to handle and it is very open minded and alert little dog. There is a "legend" that even people with allergy/asthma can handle coton de tulear - well, in my opinion there is NONE dogbreed which couldn´t give symphtoms to allergy people.

Coton de tulear is a dog with long, soft, white (usually) coat and you must be ready to spend some time with grooming and washing the dog.

Do NOT buy a longhaired dog if you are not willing to take care of it´s coat! It is a pleasure to everyone´s eyes to see a white, well groomed and clean coton de tulear - but it takes time and also some good advices to do everything well and easy. Puppy must be trained when he comes to new home, be patient and give your time to him.

Some typical points in coton ...

A typical coton de tulear has got an open mind, alert and playfull temperament. He wants to be with his own family all the time, likes to sleep in your "lap" and is ready to play with bigger dogs if he is used to them. Some dogs do bark more than other, but I think this is not the most barking little breed... Colour is mostly white, white with markings (head, over eyes, ears, body) and markings can be even brown (which is not wanted one), grey or black. Markings in body is not wanted.

Coton de tulear as a breed carries PRA and HC and patella luxationem. In Finland breed is under PeViSa which is a program against hederitary problems, eyes must be clear of PRA and HC and eyes must be checked every year if you are using your dog in breeding.
Over these years gone by I have noticed that the bag is a problem to this breed also. Breeders should be alert and honest with these things, all together - but it is not easy...

Hopefully this lovely breed will stay as healthy as possible and we breeders could co-operate in all over the world.
